Boiler installers and housing in Northern Ireland

Around Belfast and the gas network a combi is straightforward, while across most of Northern Ireland the choice is between oil, LPG and electric. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme and ECO do not apply here, so check the local support that does.

Northern Ireland has fewer homes on mains gas than the rest of the UK, and oil is the main heating fuel, so an oil boiler is a normal choice. The gas network is growing around Belfast, and it is worth asking whether your street is on it before you decide.

Northern Ireland's oil boilers are often replaced with another oil boiler, but where gas is available a conversion to a gas combi is an option. Check whether your street is on the gas network before you ask for quotes.

Most homes in Northern Ireland run on oil, so a boiler service usually means an OFTEC engineer and an oil boiler. Gas is available around Belfast, and a service there follows the usual Gas Safe routine.

Northern Ireland has the highest rate of owner-occupation in the UK and a newer housing stock than most of Great Britain, with a large share of post-war and recent detached houses and bungalows outside Belfast. Belfast itself retains substantial Victorian terraced streets. The defining feature is fuel: around two thirds of homes are heated by oil rather than mains gas, far more than anywhere else in the UK.

Planning and building rules in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has its own Building Regulations, separate from both England and Scotland, and its own planning system administered by the eleven councils. Guidance written for England does not apply. Several Great Britain funding schemes do not extend here at all, which changes the economics of energy work substantially.

The weather

Mild, wet and windy, with rainfall above the UK average and few extremes of temperature in either direction. The mild winters shorten the heating season. Wind is the more demanding factor, particularly along the north and east coasts, where exposed sites take the full force of winter storms.
