Engineers are costing homeowners an unnecessary amount of money by overpricing gas boiler repair costs.

An investigation from Which? showed engineers were not doing their job properly and instead were making a big deal out of a small problem.

Four in 10 boiler engineers failed to fix a minor problem in under five minutes, when only a lead was disconnected from the system.

The investigation looked at brand based engineers and independent companies, revealing that customers were being duped into spending more money than necessary.

One of the independent engineers suggested a range of repairing options that would cost hundreds, while another said he was unsure where the fault was and it’d cost £500 for repairs.

The worst of the lot said repairs would be too expensive and a new boiler was the best option.

And Which? say the bigger brands have their problems too. Homeserve didn’t fully service the boiler, while British Gas took three attempts to finally complete a service.

Richard Lloyd, the executive director of Which? said: “Registered engineers should provide a professional service at a fair price, so it’s inexcusable when corners are cut, faults missed and people are ripped off.”

A full gas boiler service takes its time as there’s a number of important areas to check. Initially there’ll be a visual inspection and then the engineer will check the effectiveness of the flue and ventilation system. Of course the safety components need to be looked at to ensure there is no danger.
