What happens when combi boilers are wrongly fitted?

Thousands of combi boilers are installed into UK homes every year and despite the tough regulations controlling installations, many are still wrongly fitted.

Whether the company or plumber undertaking the work isn’t Gas Safe registered, or the boiler is connected poorly, it’s extremely dangerous and can have catastrophic consequences.

One of the major problems with illegally fitted combi boilers is the possibility of carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide kills and hospitalises dozens of people in Britain every year.

It’s almost undetectable because it’s odourless and colourless and it could be too late before you’re aware it’s even in the air.

One plumbing and heating company in Newark have found themselves on the wrong side of the law, after it was revealed they performed work illegally as they weren’t Gas Safe.

Phillip Birchmore from PSB Plumbing and Heating carried out work in August 2010, capping off a gas supply and hanging a replacement boiler. But when concerns were raised about the work, a Gas Safe inspector found the 42-year-old not registered with Gas Safe.

Remember, combi boilers can be dangerous and you should always take care of who you appoint to install the boiler.

The case was passed on to the Health and Safety Executive and the Nottingham Magistrates prosecuted Birchmore for breaching regulations. Birchmore pleaded guilty to the charges and was handed a one year community order, as well as facing costs of £3,053.

The Health and Safety Executive for the case, Steve Woods, said: “At the time of carrying out the work, Phillip Birchmore was not registered with Gas Safe. In order to work legally in the UK, gas installers must be registered with the appropriate approved body. It is essential that homeowners and landlords check this before having work carried out to ensure the job is completed to a high standard and most of all, is safe.

“Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause fires, explosions, gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning. Our message to everyone is clear – check the engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card before letting them begin work and check the details online or by calling 0800 408 5500.”

Combi boilers will help to reduce your bills, but you must ensure they’re installed correctly to keep you and your home safe.
