As the gas boiler can be potentially dangerous, it’s important to have a Gas Registered engineer take care of any problems that should occur. Using illegal fitters to repair your boiler could cost you your life, and that’s the message from the Gas Safe Register. They’re urging homeowners to be aware of rogue installers and to always ask for ID before any work is carried out.

In September the first Gas Safety week took place, in an effort to raise awareness on the complications of having your boiler illegally repaired. And as the country has been hit by a cold snap with many counties covered in snow, our boilers are under more risk of breaking down.

Gas Safe are encouraging people to heed their advice, as boilers not suitably installed can start a fire, or release deadly carbon monoxide emissions. And as it’s a busy time of the year for boiler call-outs, homeowners are hiring the services of unqualified boiler engineers. These rogue companies are up and down the country installing new boilers and repairing faults, whilst putting thousands of UK homes at risk.

In fact, the incorrect fitting of gas boilers can cause injury or death. Every year dozens are hospitalised or killed because of carbon monoxide poisoning and according to the gas registration governing body, there are 7,500 cowboys operating illegal in Britain. Together these complete 250,000 illegal jobs annually.

And a recent survey of London boilers found that 79% were at risk or immediately dangerous.

Ross McTaggart says that the best way to clamp down on these rogue boiler installers is with the help of customers and homeowners. By asking for ID and reporting illegal traders, the country can be made safer in regards to gas boiler dangers.

He said: “These traders are putting people’s lives in danger. We need to raise awareness of this and urge people to make sure they check a fitter’s credentials.”
