Chance for ideal boilers with Northern Ireland scheme

Northern Ireland will have their own boiler replacement scheme in an effort to make homes more energy efficient, giving homeowners the chance to install ideal boilers to cut bills.

Nelson McCausland, the Social Development Minister, has announced the £12 million scheme which will help as many as 16,000 properties, starting from September.

Ireland joins Scotland in having their own boiler scheme, with the latter still using the Boiler Scrappage Scheme. But England and Wales no longer have Government support.

Despite this, replacing your heating system with ideal boilers is a sure-fire way to slash your bills especially if you’re currently using a G-rated system.

With a new boiler you will:

  • Reduce your heating bills by up to £300 a year, making payback as little as five years
  • Keep your home warmer in the winter with an efficient heating system
  • Slash carbon emissions and help the environment with global warming issues

And the Northern Ireland scheme for the installation of ideal boilers will be opened to those earning less than £40,000 a year, with an inefficient boiler of 15-years-old or more. This will guarantee to help those spending huge sums of money on energy bills.

The scheme will work by offering a grant of up to £1,000 to help pay for the initial costs of an efficient boiler and switching from oil to gas or wood pellet.

Mr McCausland said: “In the coming weeks, I hope to be announcing some additional funding for the scheme, which will be part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland. This could see an additional 16,000 people benefit from the grant available.”

The grant format below explains how much you’ll be eligible for:

  • £700 if earning less than £20,000 annually, but rising to £1,000 if new boiler controls are to be installed as well
  • £400 for those earning between £20,000 and £40,000 annually, but rising to £500 if new boiler controls are to be installed

Homeowners will be able to use a boiler installer of their choice when installing ideal boilers, providing they’re Gas Safe registered.

The scheme was piloted last year amongst the older generation, with 1,700 boilers replaced. Together these helped to deliver 30% better efficiency than with the old heating systems in place.
